Mexican president apologizes for statement about trans woman South Korea sees evidence of arms trade between North Korea and Hamas

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has asked for forgiveness after controversially describing a transsexual lawmaker as a “man in women’s clothes.” “I am very respectful and believe in freedom,” the head of state said on Tuesday. People should be able to determine their own gender identity, he added.

Rep. Salma Luévano, the first trans representative in the national Congress, praised his statement. “This statement is extremely important because it makes visible a struggle that has cost us decades. I am a woman and that is not up for discussion,” she writes on the online platform X, formerly Twitter. Activists had condemned the president’s comments and called on him to apologize publicly.

Transgender people are people who feel that they do not belong to the gender they were assigned at birth. (sda/dpa)
