The UN Emergency Relief Office (OCHA) needs $3.1 billion (2.6 billion francs) for this and is asking for donations, an OCHA spokesperson said on Tuesday in Geneva. This is less than for 2023, when OCHA budgeted $3.95 billion for Ukraine. According to OCHA statistics, only about 64 percent of the total has been collected so far.
According to information, calls for donations are being responded to less and less. The United Nations has therefore placed a new focus globally on only the people most in need and has cut back on programs, the spokesperson said. That is why some donation requests are smaller this year than in previous years.
The United Nations needs $1 billion this year to support Ukraine’s neighbors that have taken in refugees. According to UN figures, 6.3 million Ukrainians have fled abroad since Russia’s war against the neighboring country began in February 2022. A quarter of the country’s population has been displaced by the fighting and destruction. OCHA and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) want to present their planned projects in detail to donor countries next Monday in Geneva. (SDA)
