A woman in Switzerland, a family in Bangladesh and a cascade of complications. A Bangladeshi is deported because of his long double life. The 44-year-old was married to two different women for more than ten years. The problem: He kept the marriage in his home country a secret from the authorities here.
In 2007 he married his Swiss wife, as the “Aargauer Zeitung” reports. He was 28 at the time and she was 46. A year earlier, he had entered Switzerland illegally. He applied for asylum, but it was rejected. Thanks to the marriage, he was finally allowed to stay.
The two separated ten years after their marriage and divorced three years later. Explosive: Throughout the marriage he maintained a second wife and children in Bangladesh. He also traveled to the country several times to visit his family.
In 2022, everything was discovered: a lawyer from the Swiss embassy in Bangladesh exposed the parallel relationship. According to the “Aargauer Zeitung”, the man married his compatriot at the same time as the Swiss woman.
Because he obtained a residence permit by withholding important information, the Bangladeshi must leave Switzerland.
He tried to legally defend himself against his deportation, but the Zurich Administrative Court rejected an appeal. If the authorities had discovered his double life in 2008, his residence permit would probably have expired. The age difference also suggests that he only married the Swiss woman because he wanted to settle in this country.
The Federal Court confirmed the decision of the Zurich Administrative Court a few days ago. The man argued in court that he was well integrated here. He has many friends in common with his ex-wife. Furthermore, the court did not attach a letter of recommendation from his employer.
Taking all factors into account, the Federal Court assumes “insufficient economic, linguistic and social integration”. The judges from Lausanne believe that the man will get along well in Bangladesh. There’s a family waiting for him there. (An)
