Numerous apartments in Moscow are currently without electricity, water and heating.

Switzerland is currently freezing with temperatures below 0 degrees. But even on such frosty days you can find protection and warmth in the heated apartment. In the Russian capital and surrounding areas, the situation is currently different: while temperatures are significantly colder (minus 27 degrees), there is currently no warm refuge for thousands of people.

Numerous residential areas in the Moscow region have been without water, electricity and heating for days. According to media reports, more than twenty settlements were affected. The reason for the precarious situation: a fire at a substation in Moscow and burst heating pipes in several facilities.

Apartments and subway stations are frozen

A power outage reportedly occurred in the city of Podolsk on Thursday morning. This after a heating pipe burst in a special ammunition factory. At least 21,000 people are without electricity, Newsweek reports.

Photos and videos on social media aim to prove just how frightening the conditions on the ground really are. You see icy stairwells, frozen doors and windows and broken radiators. “The Moscow metro station Aviamotornaya turns into a refrigerator,” someone wrote on X, sharing photos of the station. Fog clouds only give an idea of the freezing temperatures.

Another user posts a video reminiscent of a campfire. However, it is not that comfortable. “The Russians have been having problems with the heating for a few days. The municipal utilities cannot find a solution,” she wrote. “People in the Moscow region make campfires to keep themselves warm.” (gs)
