In Indonesia, police intercepted a truck with more than 220 dogs destined for the slaughterhouse, according to authorities. The dogs were found in the truck bed with their legs tied and their snouts tied.

This happened when the vehicle was stopped late on Saturday evening in the city of Semarang on Java Island. Authorities arrested five members of the truck crew, who have been charged under an animal welfare ordinance and face a prison sentence of five years.

Indonesia is one of the countries where the sale of dog and cat meat is still allowed. However, there is a campaign against this that is gaining more and more followers. Some cities, such as Semarang, have therefore introduced local trade bans in recent years.

“We have been receiving information about this since last month, but only tonight were we able to thwart the transport of 226 dogs,” local police chief Irwan Anwar told reporters. According to initial investigations, the dog transporter was on its way to the neighboring city of Surakarta, where the dogs were slaughtered. Activists say they gave the information about the dog transport to the police, but then lost track of the transport. (sda/afp)
