The US Congressional Committee investigating the storming of the Capitol has issued its subpoena to Donald Trump. Last week the committee announced that the former president would be heard under oath on his role in the storming and occupation of the US House of Representatives on January 6 last year.
The commission says it has “overwhelming evidence” that Trump “personally orchestrated” the day’s events by spreading false allegations of widespread presidential election fraud two months earlier. He would also have tried to get the Justice Department to do it, trying to convince administrators, politicians and then Vice President Pence to rig the results.
Key details about exactly what Trump did and said that day are still missing, according to the committee. The only one who can clarify this is Trump himself. “We recognize that subpoenaing a former president is an important and historic step,” the committee chair and vice chair wrote in their letter. “We do not take this step easily.”
The letter to the former president’s attorneys says Trump is due to appear for questioning on Monday, November 14. This can take place behind closed doors. It will be recorded so that the images can be published later.
He also has until November 4 to turn over a number of documents, including messages he personally exchanged with lawmakers and members of extremist groups who have refused to recognize President Biden’s election victory.
Trump is not expected to cooperate with the investigation. Maybe he’s trying to buy time. If the Republicans win a majority in the House of Representatives after the Nov. 8 midterm elections, the committee is likely to be dissolved early next year. The commission hasn’t said what it will do if Trump ignores the subpoena.
Earlier this year correspondents Marieke de Vries and Lucas Waagmeester did this retrospective of the Storming of the Capitol:
The commission has been investigating the storming of the Capitol for 15 months. Trump supporters wanted to prevent Biden from being officially declared the winner of the election.
The fighting that broke out killed five people, including a police officer. 140 officers were injured and Vice President Pence and MPs and their staff fled to save their lives. Like Trump, his supporters argued that Biden was at risk of gaining power through voter fraud. Evidence of this fraud was never provided.
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon was today sentenced to four months in prison for refusing to appear before the committee. He has been provisionally released pending his appeal. He also faces a $6,500 fine.
