Senator’s name scratched off: Vandals destroy Holocaust survivor memorial plaque

The lifelong senator’s name was scratched out with a sharp object, the Ansa news agency reported on Saturday, citing Italian newspapers.

According to the information, the sign will now need to be replaced and protected by a plexiglass pane in the future.

Segre is one of the best-known living witnesses to the Shoah in Italy. In December 1943, as a 13-year-old, she tried to escape to Switzerland via Saltrio with her father Alberto. Both were rejected by Swiss authorities and arrested just a day later by Italian fascists.

At the end of January 1944, the two were deported from Milan to the Auschwitz extermination camp. On April 27, 1944, Alberto Segre was murdered by the National Socialists.

Liliana Segre became widely known outside Italy in October 2022 when, as senior president, she chaired the first meeting of the newly elected Italian Senate. In her speech, she called on other senators to stand up to hatred and exclusion – recalling the rise of fascists a hundred years earlier.

The inaugural meeting of the Senate also made international headlines because the right-wing politician Ignazio La Russa, former member of the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), was elected Senate president.
