Green meadows, brick houses and a few cars: the town of Cinderford in the south-west of England is unknown to anyone outside England. This has now suddenly changed. The reason: a rusty post.
The British newspaper ‘Metro’ has apparently set itself the goal of turning pointless things in British cities into tourist attractions. For example, the newspaper reported that a hole in a wall in Ilkeston, which was next to another hole in a wall, received rave reviews on Tripadvisor. Numerous readers then contacted the editors, who had another tip in store: the “beautiful” pole from Cinderford.
And look: there are also some Tripadvisor reviews about the rusty pole. “I traveled from Belgium specifically to visit Cinderford after hearing about the rusty post phenomenon,” one user writes ironically. «All I can say is that my visit was a life-changing, once-in-a-lifetime experience! I highly recommend a visit to this monument to anyone looking for a straight pole that actually bends. Come early before the tourist buses arrive!”
A German family assessed the monument as follows: “We were not disappointed. “As with other major attractions, you feel the historical importance of the object,” said the extra exaggerated reaction. “The steel culture of the pole is monumental,” another man writes, “it matches the sunrise perfectly and radiates so much wisdom.” One user really exaggerates: “The mast is one of the wonders of the world next to the pyramids of Giza and the Inca city of Machu Picchu.”
It is impossible to verify whether all these people actually traveled to Cinderford. Maybe they just took advantage of the opportunity to have fun with reviews on the Internet.
The rusty mast, which according to one comment is supposed to be a sewer pipe, has gained a real fan base: it has 4.5 out of 5 possible Tripadvisor points.
What online users still disagree on, however, is: is the pole a regular pole or a pipe? The debates are heated. There is no official answer yet. (An)
