28 minutes after midnight: The flight is advertising the second New Year’s Eve celebration – and lands late

United Airlines promised its passengers a second New Year’s Eve celebration.

“You only live once, but you can celebrate New Year’s Eve twice,” United Airlines writes on December 28 on X. The airline is advertising a flight from the island of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean to the Hawaiian capital Honolulu. The seven-hour flight UA200 will take off at 7:35 a.m. on January 1 and, due to the time difference, land in Hawaii on December 31 at 6:50 p.m. At least that’s the promise.

But nothing comes of the many New Year’s Eve celebrations. Because instead of just after half past six in the morning, the plane only leaves at 2:02 p.m., six and a half hours late. This also means that the passengers’ dream of starting the new year twice is shattered: the United Airlines plane does not land in Honolulu until after midnight, at 12:27 p.m. This is evident from data from the flight tracking site Flightradar24.

Double New Year for other airlines

Traveling against the time difference is nothing new: every year, several flights offer passengers the opportunity to repeat their New Year’s Eve celebration. As CNN reports, airline crew members sometimes celebrate New Year’s Eve multiple times on a single route.

Unlike United Airlines, other airlines were able to deliver on their promise of a second New Year’s Eve, data from Flightradar24 shows. For example, Cathay Pacific flight CX872 from Hong Kong to San Francisco, which took off at 1am on January 1 and landed at 8:22pm on December 31. Or the All Nipon Airways flight that left Tokyo at 12:48 PM on January 1 and arrived in Los Angeles at 5:12 PM on December 31.

Passengers are disappointed

However, the double New Year’s Eve party will not take place for passengers on the United Airlines flight. Under the airline’s advertising promise on X, they vent their frustration. “The double New Year no longer takes place,” someone writes.

“I booked this flight specifically so I could do this,” read another comment. “I received a delay notice and we won’t be back until January 1st. arrive.” The airline responded to (gs)
