“It was a surgical strike on the Hamas leadership” – these were the words used by Israel’s adviser Mark Regev (64) to describe the death of Saleh al-Aruri († 57). He was killed in an explosion in Beirut on Tuesday. US security officials say Israel is responsible for the assassination attempt on the Hamas leader. And he’s not the only one on the Israeli hit list.
On the orders of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74), the Israeli secret service Mossad kills Hamas, “wherever it is.” The hunt is on for Hamas leaders in Lebanon, Turkey and Qatar. Al-Aruri is probably the most important political figure in Hamas, which has so far been eliminated by Israel. Which names are also on the hit list – and which ones have the Israeli army already killed?
High on the Israeli list is Ismail Haniya (61), because he is the top leader of Hamas operating abroad. He served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority from 2006 to 2007 and is now one of the most important figures within Hamas. He organizes Hamas’s political activities from Qatar and Turkey. While Hamas was carrying out massacres in Israel on October 7, Haniya was celebrating, as videos on X show.
“Jahia Sinwar (61) is a dead man,” army spokesman Daniel Hagari said of the Hamas leader. He was apparently one of the masterminds of the terrorist attack on Israel. When Hamas was founded in 1987, Sinwar helped found the terrorist organization. He was responsible for punishing Palestinians who collaborated with Israel in the 1980s. This is how he got the name “Butcher of Khan Yunis”. The Hamas leader learned Hebrew in prison. In 2017, after his release, he took over Hanija’s position as leader in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas leader Mohammed Deif (58) is to Israel what Osama bin Laden (1957-2011) was to the Americans. His real name is unknown. He has been one of Israel’s most wanted people for 30 years – and yet he is still alive. Deif is the leader of the Qassam Brigades and the armed wing of Hamas. The only photo that exists of him is more than twenty years old. He must look very different now, as he is said to have lost an eye and a leg in an Israeli attack in 2006.
Unlike many other senior Hamas leaders, including al-Aruri, Deif lives in Gaza and sends his children to school there. Deif is said to have planned and led the attacks on October 7.
According to ‘France24’, Marwan Issa (58) is Deif’s right hand. He is the deputy leader of the Kassam Brigades. He was also on Hamas’s most wanted terrorist list in the early 2000s and was injured in an assassination attempt by Israel in 2006. He led Hamas special forces during the October 7 terrorist attacks.
Khalid Mashal (67) ruled Hamas for a long time from Syria, where he lived in exile before Haniya took over. He is believed to lead Hamas’s radical groups. In 1997, the Mossad, on Netanyahu’s orders, attempted to execute Mashal with a poisonous injection.
Politician Issam al-Daalis (57) was appointed to the administrative committee of the Hamas government in 2021. He has not yet been hit by Western sanctions. As the Times of Israel reports, al-Daalis hid with other members of the Hamas Politburo in tunnels under attack by the Israeli army. “It can be said with certainty that the underground area where they were located was very badly damaged,” army spokesman Hagari said of the attack. Nothing more is known.
Hamas’s two political leaders, Zakaria Abu Maamar and Jawad Abu Shammala, were killed in airstrikes on October 10 Operation “Iron Swords” killed in Khan Yunis. On October 14, two Hamas leaders, Murad Abu Murad and Ali al-Qadi, were killed in airstrikes. On October 7, Qadi led the Nukhba, considered an elite group of Hamas terrorists, which launched attacks in many Israeli settlements near the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian commander of the Kassam Brigades, Ayman Nofal, was killed on October 23 in an attack on a refugee camp in Burej. According to Israeli information, Nofal was involved in “numerous terrorist attacks” against Israel. Jamila al-Sahnti was the wife of the late Hamas co-founder Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi. In 2021, she became the first woman to join the Hamas Politburo. On October 19, she was killed by Israeli bombing.
