Missing for 12 years: divers find the body of a woman in a sunken car wreck

Sandra L.* was last seen on May 8, 2012. The then 47-year-old drove to Kissimmee from her grandmother’s house in Orlando, USA. There she met a man she had previously met through an online dating platform. When she arrived in the town 22 miles away, she informed her grandmother. She promised to contact her again before she went home.

But it would be the last time the grandmother received a sign of life from her granddaughter. Although L. was seen leaving a restaurant in Kissimmee in her red minivan, there has been no trace of the American since.

63 water bodies searched

Local police and the volunteer diving group “Sunshine State Sonar” worked closely together in the search for the missing woman. The group specializes in searching for missing persons and vehicles using sonar technology. The divers have searched 63 waters for the missing 47-year-old over the past 17 months.

Last week, a new tip came from an officer with the Orlando Police Department: information about which cell phone tower the woman’s cell phone was last called on. This narrowed the search to the retention basin near the Disney World exit on Interstate 4 in Kissimmee. ‘Sunshine State Sonar’ reported this in a message on Facebook.

“We located a minivan that appeared to be submerged at a depth of 4.26 meters,” the group wrote in their statement. “Our team quickly got dressed and dived to the vehicle to confirm the license plate.”

A body was also recovered on Saturday while the minibus was found. L.’s family confirmed to the American television channel ‘6 South Florida’ that these are the remains of the missing persons.

“Thank you for bringing my husband’s mother home,” a family member said in the Facebook post. “We cannot express how grateful we are to you. We finally know what happened. We can finally lay her beautiful soul to rest.” (gs)
