Hundreds of flights canceled due to warning strikes in Italy At least 50 killed in protests against interim government in Chad

Hundreds of flights to and from Italy were canceled on Friday due to a nationwide warning strike at Italian air traffic control Enav. However, there were no full benches and long queues at Rome-Fiumicino airport, reports Ansa news agency.

Compared to the usual number of passengers on Friday morning, Terminal 1 was “half empty”. Due to the work stoppage that has been known for days, many passengers seem to have been informed about delays or canceled flights.

The scoreboard at Rome airport showed numerous canceled connections. Numerous flights to and from Switzerland were also affected, Zurich and Geneva airports reported on request. In Zurich, the airline Swiss had to cancel ten flights, other airlines were not affected because they either did not fly to Italy or did not have a flight scheduled for today, the latter was the case with the Italian airline Ita.

At Zurich airport, the destinations of Milan Malpensa, Venice, Florence, Napoli, Rome, Brindisi and Palermo were affected, a spokeswoman said. Eight flights have also been canceled in Geneva, according to a spokesperson. Two more are scheduled for Friday, one from Switzerland and one from Ita.

According to the airport spokeswoman, not all flights have been canceled in Zurich, for example, the Edelweiss flights to Olbia and Catania would take place according to the flight schedule on Friday. In addition, the holiday airline operated a flight to Cagliari in the morning. Swiss was also able to operate some flights, as can be seen on the airport’s website. None of the destinations affected by the strike have been completely canceled. “Air traffic controllers had planned two time windows during the day in which flights could take place,” said the Geneva airport spokesman.

The trade union federations CGIL, CISL and UIL had called for the warning strike in Italy. According to employee representatives, Enav did not meet the demands made when negotiating employment contracts and hours. Enav employees had already stopped working in July. (sda/awp/dpa)
