Parts of Germany have been underwater for days and weeks. The reason was a storm around Christmas, melting snow and persistent rain. The consequences are full dams, rivers that transport too much water and flooded meadows and fields. Even at the beginning of the new year, the situation in the flood areas is not improving.
The weather service expected repeated rain showers on Wednesday, with isolated thunderstorms in the southwest by the evening, but hardly any rain in the southeast. According to the DWD, there will also be rain showers in some areas on Thursday.
The situation is currently particularly bad in Lower Saxony. Because heavy rainfall will continue according to the German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts, the situation will remain tense on Wednesday.
People on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein are currently having to prepare for a new storm surge. According to forecasts from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on Tuesday, this is likely to be significantly weaker than the storm surge of October 2023. The agency predicted water levels of up to 1.20 meters above normal levels.
Despite water levels falling slightly, numerous streams and rivers in North Rhine-Westphalia continue to flood.
Since Christmas, Saxony-Anhalt has also been battling serious flooding in many places. After a week, the water levels are already falling in many places, but in some places the emergency services are still battling the water masses in the new year.
