At a New Year’s Eve party, a shot rang out from the gun of Emanuele Pozzolo, a deputy of the post-fascist ruling party Fratelli d’Italia.

In Rossazza, northern Italy – about 70 kilometers from Turin – a New Year’s Eve party ended badly. As various media report, a man was injured in the leg by a gunshot.

The owner of the revolver was not an unknown face: the weapon was owned by Emanuele Pozzolo, a deputy of the post-fascist party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46). The incident caused a storm of outrage.

“Unsuitable, incompetent, not socially acceptable”

The opposition was particularly outraged that a shot had gone off from his 22-caliber North American Arms mini-revolver. They called Pozzolo’s behavior irresponsible.

“We would not have believed that the passion for weapons in Giorgia Meloni’s party was so great that MPs would take them with them to the New Year’s celebrations,” criticized the head of the Democratic Party (PD), Elly Schlein (38), calling on Government Leader must take “measures against Pozzolo”.

Former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi (48) from the political center also reacted indignantly: “Why bring weapons to a New Year’s party with MPs and members of the government? Meloni’s leadership class is not one: they are unqualified, incompetent, and socially unacceptable. And dangerous,” Renzi explains on the online service X, formerly Twitter.

There was initially no statement from Prime Minister Meloni and the Fratelli d’Italia party.

He wanted to show the gun, but then shots were fired

Pozzolo, who has been criticized in the past for sexist and discriminatory statements, finally told ‘La Reppublica’: ‘I confirm that the shot was fired accidentally with a pistol that I had with me according to regulations, but that I did not used to be. , who shot,” said a statement from the MP, which the left-wing newspaper “La Repubblica” quoted on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old victim suffered minor injuries to his leg. The man was one of about thirty guests. The exact sequence of the incident, which took place after midnight, was initially unclear and was the subject of investigation. Pozzolo initially told investigators at the scene that he had taken the gun out “to show it when a shot went off,” the newspaper further reported.

In December, the ultra-right party Fratelli d’Italia proposed lowering the minimum age for a hunting firearms license to 16 years.

Carrying weapons in Italy is strictly regulated and requires a permit. Holders of a hunting or sporting firearms permit may only carry a weapon while hunting or at the shooting range. Only those licensed to carry a weapon for personal protection are allowed to carry it anywhere. (dzc/AFP)
