More than 2,200 people have been evacuated on the Indonesian island of Flores due to increased volcanic activity. (symbol image)

A spokesperson for the authority announced this on Tuesday.

The volcano has erupted several times in recent weeks, most recently on Monday emitting a 1.5 kilometer high ash cloud. Authorities declared the second-highest of four alert levels and expanded the restricted area around the volcano to a radius of four kilometers. The airport in the town of Maumere, about 80 kilometers from the volcano, was closed, according to the official Antara news agency.

There are a total of almost 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. The country in Southeast Asia, which consists of more than 17,000 islands, is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where various tectonic plates collide. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur regularly. In early December, the eruption of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra killed 23 people.
