Three former aides of Donald Trump warn of a possible second term for the former American president. This could mean “the end of American democracy as we know it – and I don’t say that lightly,” former communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin explained to American broadcaster ABC News.

Trump has already taken “historic and unconstitutional actions” to “hold democratic elections” and stay in power, she said, referring to the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

At the time, supporters of President Trump, who had already been voted out of office, stormed the US Congress to prevent the Senate and House of Representatives from formally confirming Joe Biden’s victory. Trump had previously spoken of a “stolen election.”

“As a country we are extremely vulnerable”

Former White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews emphasized that Trump continues to amplify the stolen election narrative “to this day.” Trump’s rhetoric has become “increasingly erratic,” Matthews said, pointing to his threats to circumvent the Constitution and suggestions to use the judiciary as a weapon to retaliate against his political enemies.

The November election is a crucial one to continue protecting America’s institutions and the constitutional republic, according to former White House adviser Cassidy Hutchinson. “We are extremely vulnerable as a country, and that also applies to the democratic experiment.” If Trump is nominated as a presidential candidate, “our focus must be on him not being re-elected president in November,” Hutchinson added.

Griffin, Matthews and Hutchinson have been critics of Trump since the storming of the Capitol. Matthews resigned a few hours after the attack, Griffin had already left her position in 2020 and Hutchinson left the White House at the end of Trump’s presidency. All three testified before the House committee investigating the storming of the Capitol.
