Two Germans had to spend New Year’s Eve in an emergency bivouac

A couple from Berlin had to spend New Year’s Eve outside in the bitter cold and bad weather in the Austrian mountains. The 26-year-old man and his 39-year-old girlfriend were on a high-alpine hike in Carinthia, but did not reach a refuge at an altitude of 2,287 meters as hoped due to snowfall and strong winds, police said on Monday.

They had set up an emergency bivouac at about 1,850 meters altitude. For an emergency bivouac, hikers usually look for a sheltered spot on the mountain and try to protect themselves against the cold and weather with the equipment they bring. But the weather continued to deteriorate, so the two called 911 at 3 a.m. Mountain rescuers climbed to the Germans on foot and reached them around 6:30 am.

The two were exhausted and hypothermic, but unharmed. The rescuers accompanied them into the valley.
