During the solemn service on New Year’s Eve, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of gratitude and hope in view of the new year. The 87-year-old head of the Catholic Church led the New Year’s Eve service on Sunday evening and delivered the vespers sermon with the traditional hymn “Te Deum” in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The faithful must live every day and every moment with gratitude and hope, the Pope said. This is especially important in view of the new year.
Francis did not speak during the New Year’s Eve service about the first anniversary of his predecessor’s death. He did pay tribute to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI during the traditional Angelus prayer around noon. He called on people in St. Peter’s Square to applaud Benedict, saying: “We remember him with gratitude and admiration. He blesses us from heaven and accompanies us.” Benedict
