The taste of pineapple on pizza is questionable. The Italians in particular have a clear opinion about this and hate the fruit in their beloved national dish. But not everyone seems so stuck in Italy’s culinary traditions.

Gino Sorbillo, one of Naples’ most famous pizza makers, recently caused a stir on social media. The Italian owns several restaurants in Italy and abroad. Now he has expanded his pizzeria to Tokyo and Miami.

“Guys, I swear she’s good.”

In a video on Instagram, Sorbillo has a pizza on the table in front of him – with pineapple on top. ‘Guys, don’t panic. I am attached to tradition, but I want to try it because I put it on my menu,” he reassures his followers.

As he explains, he uses his knife to cut a round slice of pineapple from the center of the pizza. Then he picks up his fork, hesitates for a moment and puts the piece of pineapple pizza in his mouth. He closes his eyes in pleasure while chewing and even puts his hand over his heart. “Guys, I swear, it’s good,” confirms the Italian.

A day later, Sorbillo raised the bar again. On Instagram he shares a photo of himself: six pineapples on the table in front of him. “I’m sure 99 percent of the skeptics of the ‘Pizza Napoletana with Pineapple’ have never tried it,” he writes. At the same time, Sorbillo invites his followers to visit him in the heart of Naples and taste the new pizza.

The majority of users are irritated

Reactions to his video are divided. “Pizza with knife and fork and also with pineapple… This time I’m crying, Gino, not you,” one user wrote. “I love pizza, I love pineapple, but we shouldn’t mix the sacred with the profane,” says another.

Many accuse the Italian of doing all this just for a marketing campaign and social media – at the expense of Italian tradition. “What a disappointment! I didn’t expect that from you,” someone says indignantly. “How you can destroy a Neapolitan tradition… Americanize it,” complains another user.

Although the comments section is mostly negative, Sorbillo also receives positive feedback. “If you do it, things will definitely work out,” says one follower happily. Others say they definitely want to give pizza a try. However, this means they are in a minority of Sorbillo’s followers.
