Australian journalist and documentary maker John Pilger has died, the BBC reported on Sunday, citing friends of Pilger. An accompanying message was previously posted on his profile on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Accordingly, Pilger died in London on Saturday at the age of 84.
Pilger, who has lived in Britain since the 1960s, has worked for media such as the Reuters news agency, the Daily Mirror tabloid and the British television channel ITV. He made a name for himself in the 1960s and 1970s with reports on the war in Vietnam, but also on the American civil rights movement and the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.
Pilger was considered a harsh critic of Western military interventions and the Australian government’s treatment of indigenous people in his homeland. More recently, he has also campaigned vigorously for the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Assange’s wife Stella, who according to Wikileaks has direct contact with Pilger’s family, praised him on X as “one of the greats” who exposed the greatest injustices. (sda/dpa)
