Sydney prepares gigantic fireworks – for the first time with AI, Algerian ex-minister dies prosecuted in Switzerland

In Sydney, Australia, preparations for the New Year’s Eve party including spectacular fireworks are in full swing. At New Year’s Eve (2pm CET), a mega light show will once again illuminate the sky against the world-famous backdrop of the Harbor Bridge and Opera House. According to the organizers, more than 13,500 fireworks with all kinds of extensive special effects will be set off in the port area alone. In addition, for the first time ever, there will be light projections, generated by artificial intelligence, that cause neither air nor noise pollution.

A million spectators are expected in the east coast metropolis, including visitors from European countries. Traditionally, about a billion people around the world watch on screens.

Already on Sunday morning, many had secured a spot at Mrs Macquaries Point in the Royal Botanic Gardens to get the best view of the spectacle in the evening, 9News reported. You can also marvel at light projections on iconic buildings, especially on the sail roofs of the Opera House, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Sydney is always one of the first major cities in the world to ring in the new year. The first big fireworks display will go off over the harbor at 9pm local time (11am CET), followed by the 12-minute huge show at midnight. Called ‘Calling Country’ there will be not only lights, but also music, dance and art from indigenous Australians. A traditional indigenous welcome ceremony will also take place beforehand.

About 2,000 additional police officers are present to ensure safety. The City of Sydney has asked people to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead. (sda/dpa)
