Customers buy fireworks in German Lidl empty within seven minutes Victorinox loses money due to Benko’s Signa disaster – further losses threaten

Before the store opened at 7 a.m., there were already 50 customers in front of the Lidl branch in Dieburg. They want to buy firecrackers for New Year’s Eve. After seven minutes the shelves were empty.

Since Thursday, customers can buy fireworks in supermarkets throughout Germany. In a Lidl branch in Hesse-Dieburg, the crowds were particularly high: within seven minutes of the store opening at 7 a.m., customers reportedly sold out rockets and firecrackers, a customer reported on Facebook.

«Dieburger Lidl. There are 7 minutes between the two photos,” he writes and posts two photos. The first shows the rush of men grabbing the best bangers from the shelves, the second shows the empty shelves. There are few fireworks left in some compartments.

More than fifty customers are said to have waited in front of the Lidl branch before the store opened, the customer reported to the newspaper ‘Bild’. “I thought it was positive that everyone behaved very well,” said the man from Dieburg. “There were no arguments and no escalations.”

The demand for fireworks and rockets is very high this year, a Lidl spokeswoman told ‘Bild’. “The colleagues at the Dieburg branch were well prepared and quickly refilled the fireworks items, in accordance with legal regulations.”

Long lines like Black Friday in the US

Videos from different cities circulated on social media. In some of them you see dozens of people queuing early in the morning or densely packed in the branches, as our German colleagues from watson.de report.

What may make some sellers happy is that not all supermarkets and discount stores still sell fireworks. According to the “Tagesspiegel”, another Edeka market owner in Berlin recently explained that fireworks are no longer available in its markets due to environmental and animal protection concerns.

Retailers treat the subject very differently. “We have everything from complete renunciation to only selling table fireworks to dealers who continue to offer everything,” said Nils Busch-Petersen, general manager of the Berlin-Brandenburg trade association, quoted by the “Tagesspiegel”.
