Can a college professor upload pornographic material to password-protected sites on the Internet? Or are these such “heinous acts” that they are likely to cause “significant reputational damage” to his university?

The first view is represented by communications scholar Joe Gow, the second by the university where he was until recently chancellor. This week, the University of Wisconsin in the city of La Crosse, population 50,000, announced it had dismissed the outspoken 63-year-old from his post as chancellor.

Accusations of censorship against the university

Gow told US broadcaster WTMJ about the clips: “They are serious works in which we explore consensual adult sexuality.” He therefore assumes that the videos are protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which, among other things, guarantees freedom of expression.

The actors would be interviewed in a way that – unlike their other works – would show their human side, Gow explained to the New York Times. “It’s an interesting process.” His wife, who also previously worked as a professor at the University of La Crosse, said if such videos were punished it would constitute censorship. This is not worthy of an institution of higher education. The 56-year-old emphasized that the sex scenes published by the couple could only be seen by people who actively made an effort to do so.

The couple is now considering taking legal action against the university’s decision. Meanwhile, a petition has been published online calling for Gow to be reinstated as chancellor. By Friday afternoon, however, only 300 people had signed.
