When mountain climbers run into trouble, it is usually due to a change in the weather or exhaustion. E-bike riders who set out for a bike ride despite meters of snow are not actually on the list of rescued.

What happened on Thursday in the Tyrolean district of Reutte is all the more astonishing. Two German tourists (36, 44) went on a bike ride. Around 1:30 p.m. they reached the Schneetal-Alm in Wängle, which is not open during the winter months, at 1,650 meters above sea level, as the “Kronen Zeitung” reports.

Previously, they had to use push assistance at an altitude of about 1,200 meters because there was so much snow. But the German tourists did not want to give up: they continued to the top.

I fell 100 feet into the stream bed

On the way back, the inevitable happened: while trying to cross a frozen stream, they slipped and fell 100 feet into the stream bed. Because the man and woman could not free themselves, they called 911. A police helicopter was eventually able to rescue her with a rope and fly into the valley unharmed.

The rescue team was so impressed by the operation that they could hardly believe their eyes: “I have never experienced anything like this,” pilot Hans Schlager told the Kronen Zeitung, shaking his head. «I told my colleagues to take pictures. Otherwise no one will believe us,” Schlager continued.

Holiday guests must pay the operational costs themselves. According to the pilot, this should amount to more than 3,000 euros. There is also the cost of mountain rescues. (An)
