It is common knowledge that fireworks and firecrackers are harmful to the environment. They can also deter wildlife and pets. Even for people who have fled war zones, the New Year’s Eve explosion can bring back traumatic memories.

New Year’s Eve is particularly stressful for emergency services and hospitals. Year after year there are injuries, fires, property damage and even attacks on officials.

Last year the riots in Berlin were particularly violent. There were burning cars, shots fired at ambulances and rescue personnel, and fireworks attacks on officers. The Berlin police and fire brigade now warn together in a video published on X. Their message: “Don’t attack us!”

At the beginning of the video, which lasts approximately one and a half minutes, fragments from the riots are shown. Then serious music plays while firefighters and police respond to the camera: “We are going into action together so that you can celebrate New Year’s Eve safely. And to help you when you need us. Please respect our work, give us enough space to do it and follow our instructions.”

“Don’t ruin your future.”Warning in the police video

Last but not least, there is a call to all New Year’s Eve celebrations: “Do not attack us, do not shoot us with fireworks, rockets or loose guns. You are committing a criminal offense and risk several years. So do not ruin your future and respect us.”

The state of emergency applies from 7 p.m

The video sparks heated discussions. One comment reads: “Let’s grow some balls! The whining is unbearable.” Someone else wrote: “It’s a shame such a video is even necessary.”

Shortly after the video was published, the Berlin Fire Department sent out a press release. It said the so-called “New Year’s Eve state of emergency” will be declared as planned on December 31 at 7 p.m. To cope with this, around 1,500 emergency services will be on site – compared to regular operations, the number of personnel has tripled.

Switzerland is much safer

In this country the situation is less dramatic. Sarah Wahl, media spokesperson for the Bern cantonal police, told Blick: “There have been no injured police officers on New Year’s Eve in the past two years. We currently do not have a campaign like the Berlin police are currently conducting to use force against officers.”

Pascal Siegenthaler, media spokesperson for the Zurich city police, does not think the situation is as dramatic as in Berlin: “You cannot completely compare the situation. Last year we did not have as explicit attacks on firefighters, paramedics or police as in Berlin.” He also emphasizes: “We have a fireworks ban in Zurich. Of course some people still light fireworks, but usually on a smaller scale.” Anyone who violates the ban risks a fine of 120 francs. Anyone who endangers other people will be reported.

The Basel cantonal police also remain relaxed. “We do not expect riots like those in German or French cities,” media spokesman Stefan Schmitt told Blick.
