Latvia transfers cars of alcohol offenders to Ukraine Major operation in Sri Lanka: Police arrest 15,000 people in one fell swoop

Latvia has seized more than 270 cars from alcohol offenders this year and handed them over to war-prone Ukraine. The vehicles had a total value of more than 900,000 euros, the Latvian news portal Delfi reported on Monday evening. The cases of another 34 cars worth more than 160,000 euros are pending.

In February, the Latvian parliament decided that cars owned by drunken Latvians would be seized for the benefit of Ukrainian citizens. These will therefore be transferred to Ukraine for free use.

Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than 22 months. As a result of Russian air strikes and fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, civilian cars are regularly damaged and destroyed. People urgently need the vehicles, for example to escape from areas particularly affected by the war. (sda/dpa)
