The 13th month salary, also known as a Christmas bonus, is now an integral part of most employment contracts in Switzerland. However, things sometimes look different abroad. A strange Christmas bonus substitute has now gone viral.
An American woman received a potato instead of an extra salary. As if that wasn’t bizarre enough, she now has to pay taxes for the strange attention.
The online community is currently wondering about Amanda Panda’s story. She made her crazy experience public on social media platform X.
Amanda works in an American hospital. There she received her Christmas bonus in the form of a baked potato. She added a photo of the tuber to her message. The baked potato was wrapped in aluminum foil and had a dollop of sour cream on top.
As if that weren’t enough, taxes are also levied on the potato. “They said it was worth $15, so it would be taxed on our next paycheck,” Amanda explains
The potato story causes incredulous amazement among the X users. One user writes: “So potatoes are now a means of payment. I filled my gas tank yesterday and it cost me two baked potatoes. However, Amanda must pay the taxes to the state in dollars and not in crop form.
Opinions differ on the issue of taxation. Some commenters note that taxes are only due if the value is over $50. Other users recommend one step in particular to Amanda: canceling. “Find a new job!”, she is asked. Amanda, who is probably already looking for a new job, asked the community: “Where are the offers, people?!”
You wonder if it can get any worse – and the answer is: yes. Last year there would have been a 30-minute web conference with managers as a Christmas present. So the meal was a real upgrade.
It appears Amanda isn’t the only one disappointed with her Christmas bonus. Other frustrated employees spoke out under the post, which was viewed by more than 2 million X users.
