Despair is growing in Ukraine. In the war against the Russian invaders, the political and military leadership continues to raise slogans of perseverance. But while Russia appears to be drawing on an almost endless supply of weapons and soldiers, Ukraine’s reserves are being depleted.

Statements by a senior military commander are now also causing a stir in the Ukrainian media. He no longer believes in victory. The best possible scenario: Ukraine might still be able to gain a good negotiating position. But there is a high price to pay for this.

The war with Russia will not end in victory over the aggressors, but in negotiations, Vasily Samovar, service chief of the Air and Defense Service of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, told local television channel Dnieper TV. The only ray of hope for Ukraine remains a strong negotiating position.

Exhausted troops

If Russia maintains the current pace of mobilization and transition to the military economy, its victory is guaranteed, Samovar said. Ukraine must therefore prepare for total mobilization and a harsh winter.

“2024 will be much more difficult than 2023 and 2022 combined,” says the service chief. “I believe that this war, like every war in the world, will end with negotiations. But we have to be in a strong position.” Lacking as much money and resources as Russia, “we must prepare for total mobilization and a difficult winter.”

The Washington Post had previously reported that exhaustion was spreading among Ukrainian forces. The war cannot be won with motivation alone, says a Ukrainian soldier of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade. “The boys are tired – very tired,” he said. “They are still motivated – many people understand they have no other choice.”

Kiev is also calling on Ukrainians in Switzerland to serve in the army

Kiev wants up to half a million more men at the front – the mobilization of women is now also being discussed. This comes as new Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov, 41, this week raised the issue of the mobilization of able-bodied men living abroad.

Men between the ages of 25 and 60 must register for military service – ‘wherever you are’ is the call from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to able-bodied male citizens. The call also applies to refugees in Switzerland, the ministry confirmed to the “SonntagsZeitung”.

Nearly 70,000 Ukrainian refugees live in Switzerland. According to the State Secretariat for Migration, 9,300 men between the ages of 25 and 60 have been registered who are now motivated to serve in the war or at the front.
