Nearly two and a half years after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, a former Colombian soldier confessed on Friday to his involvement in the plot. The 45-year-old confessed in a court in Miami, Florida.
The soldier had previously entered into an agreement with the prosecutor’s office. According to the indictment, the soldier broke into the Haitian president’s home and stole money and jewelry. Accordingly, he played only a minor role in the assassination plot. The verdict is expected on March 1 next year.
Moïse was murdered in his home in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on July 7, 2021, by an assassination crew consisting of military-trained Colombians. His personal safety did not intervene. According to the American legal system, the purpose of Moïse’s murder was a change of power in Haiti.
The US Department of Justice has declared US courts responsible for the case, because the assassination attempt on Moïse was partly planned in Florida.
A former Haitian senator was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday for his involvement in the assassination plot. Haitian-Chilean businessman Rodolphe Jaar and former Colombian soldier Germán Alejandro Rivera García were also previously sentenced to life imprisonment.
The assassination of the president plunged the Caribbean state, already characterized by crime, political instability and deep poverty, into an even deeper crisis. Today, gangs control about 80 percent of Port-au-Prince. (sda/afp)
