The ship “MS Maud” is owned by the shipping company Hurtigruten AS.

266 passengers are enjoying a unique expedition through the North Sea when suddenly a huge wave shakes the more than 130 meter long ship. The command bridge is completely destroyed, the ship floats without power in the vastness of the ocean: what sounds like a disaster movie happened on Thursday evening.

The “MS Maud” had approximately 400 people on board and was en route from the Norwegian town of Floroe to Tilbury, Great Britain. Storm Pia, which causes hurricane winds in northwest Europe, caused high waves. One wave was so high it broke the window of the ship’s command bridge. The rushing water caused a power outage, making it impossible for the crew to continue operating the steamboat.

Radar and navigation systems failed

The officers managed to manually steer the ship from the engine room and keep it stable. However, the crew had no idea where exactly the ship was. It was drifting disoriented and at low speed on the open sea. At the time of the accident, the “MS Maud” was approximately 200 kilometers off the west coast of Denmark and approximately 330 kilometers off the east coast of Great Britain. The ship immediately made several distress calls.

A spokesperson for the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which is responsible for coordinating search and rescue efforts, confirmed the incident to British media on Thursday. “This afternoon, December 21, the MS Maud reported a temporary power outage after encountering a monster wave,” the spokesperson said. Danish rescue ships immediately rushed to the scene of the accident to support the crew. The ship managed to dock at a Danish port around 10:30 p.m. A total of 500 people were brought to safety. No one was injured.

The ship is used for cruises through the Norwegian fjords and the North Sea. According to the shipping company’s website, the ‘MS Maud’ is equipped with technology that makes it ‘predestined’ for travel between Norway and Great Britain. (An)
