In the worst mass murder in Czech history, a 24-year-old man killed at least 15 people at Charles University in Prague on Thursday evening. 25 others were seriously injured. The country is in shock. Meanwhile, more and more details about the bloody crime are coming to light.
The alleged gunman first killed his father, Prague police chief Vondrášek said at a news conference on Thursday evening. “The police received information at 12:20 that a 24-year-old man from the village of Hostouň left for Prague because he wanted to commit suicide.” When they arrived in the village, the officers found his father’s lifeless body.
The 24-year-old student at the Faculty of Philosophy drove to Prague after killing his father and opened fire on the fourth floor of the university building around 2 p.m. The police spokesperson stated that although there was a shootout with police officers, the perpetrator most likely committed suicide. None of his police officers were killed during the operation, Vondrášek said.
Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said on CT public television that there was no evidence of a second shooter or of a terrorist background. He thanked all emergency services for their quick action and efforts. The building was quickly evacuated.
Meanwhile, videos circulated on social media showing fleeing students on the facade of the building and on the stairs in front of the university. The students ran for their lives. Dramatic scenes also took place in the building. Teachers and students barricaded themselves in the lecture halls and tried to remain quiet.
The frenzy in the heart of the Czech capital also shocked European politicians. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser appeared shocked. The SPD politician wrote this on Thursday on the short message service (a)
