The Colorado Supreme Court caused a stir with a spectacular ruling: it excluded former President Donald Trump (77) from the 2024 presidential elections. The reason is his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The court relies on the “prohibition of insurrection” in the 14th Amendment. The court’s decision was extremely limited at 4:3. The ruling is suspended until early January to give the parties time to appeal.
Trump’s lawyers had already announced in advance that they would immediately appeal to the US Supreme Court in the event of defeat. The last word should now be spoken there.
The Colorado Supreme Court is the first court in the US to apply the corresponding clause in the Constitution to Trump. Similar lawsuits in Minnesota and New Hampshire were dismissed on procedural grounds, according to the New York Times. A similar lawsuit is still pending in the Michigan Supreme Court. (neo)
