The new alliance will not stop the rebels from continuing their “operations in support of Gaza,” said Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of the Politburo of the militant Houthi movement. The US proposed alliance should “protect Israel and militarize the sea without any justification.” Anyone who wants to expand the conflict must ‘accept the consequences of their actions’.

In recent years, the Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and in the Red Sea. After the war in Gaza began, they declared solidarity with the Islamist Hamas and initially tried to attack Israel directly. From mid-November onwards they focused their attacks with drones and missiles on ships linked to Israel. Meanwhile, ships that have no connection with Israel or are heading to Israeli ports also appear to be targets.

The US has proposed a new alliance to better protect the key Red Sea shipping route leading to the Suez Canal. The US military should cooperate even better with the armed forces of other countries in the region. Large shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the route because of the attacks. (SDA)
