Police officers inspect the crime scene in Vienna where the young man murdered a homeless man.

In Vienna, a 17-year-old boy is suspected of killing two homeless people in July and seriously injuring a woman in August. The police have been hunting for the unknown perpetrator for weeks. Then on December 11 came the surprise: the man walked into a police station in Vienna and said: “I am the homeless murderer.”

His lawyer reports in the Austrian media about his client’s background and how he developed from a good, well-behaved student to a serious criminal.

Apparently, as a ten-year-old boy, the perpetrator suffered from the divorce of his parents, who have both entered into a new relationship. But he has built a close bond with his new little stepsister. He appreciated being able to care for her and loved her dearly in a way he had never loved anyone before.

The sky above him fell when his 29-year-old stepmother shot her four-year-old daughter in a forest in late March 2021 and then shot herself. This act of the little girl devastated him, the young man told his lawyer.

Hunting for the homeless

As a result, he dropped out of high school, started using drugs and supported himself with temporary jobs. “When I sat on it, I felt no pain – and it got colder and colder,” he reportedly told his lawyer.

In this state he literally went on a manhunt and chased homeless people for hours. When they went to sleep on a bench or a meadow and no one was around, he took his switchblade knife from a sheath attached to his right leg and repeatedly stabbed the defenseless people.

I testified to the lawyer: “They screamed in pain, I attacked them until I thought they had no chance of survival.”

Confession due to a new acquaintance

And about the motive he said: “I was sad because I didn’t get any affection from anyone, and I felt satisfaction because I knew that someone had to suffer even more than me.” The Austrian media speculate that the fact that there was a bounty of 10,000 euros on his head may have given him appreciation.

The fact that he turned himself in was because he met a girl at a job who gave him security. His lawyer said he wanted to get clean and avoid being prosecuted for his crimes for five to 10 years.

The experts must now determine whether the perpetrator, who was only 16 years old at the time of the bloody acts, was mentally healthy. Depending on this, he may be admitted to an institution. There is also a risk of a prison sentence of up to 15 years. (GF)
