German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (59) paints black. “Dangers may be upon us at the end of this decade.” He said this in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.

The SPD minister warns of the danger of war from Russia for the West. “Putin is currently significantly increasing Russian arms production. According to the Duma decision, an increase of more than 60 percent.” There is an enormous need for catching up within NATO and also in Germany.

Vladimir Putin’s (71) threats against the Baltic states, Georgia and Moldova must be taken very seriously. This is not just sabre-rattling from the Russian president. Pistorius: “We now have about five to eight years in which we have to catch up – in the armed forces, in industry and in society.”

Putin denies this

In recent years, politicians and experts have repeatedly warned that Putin wants to attack Europe after Ukraine. Mayor Vitali Klitschko (52) of Kiev said even before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine that Putin wanted to restore the old Soviet empire, which also included the former GDR.

Putin denies such plans. In an interview with Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, he said Russia has neither reason nor interest in going to war with NATO countries – neither geopolitically, economically, politically nor militarily. Putin: “That is absolute nonsense. We have no territorial objections and do not want to influence our relationship with them. We are interested in developing the relationship.”

Take danger seriously

But Pistorius emphasizes that many have not yet understood how great the danger from the East is. “I sometimes have the impression that it has not yet been internalized everywhere that we need to do more to guarantee our safety,” Pistorius said in “Bild”.

It is clear that Germany must be ready. “Given the serious crisis, we need armed forces that can defend this country – in the event of war.” (gf/male)
