A mix-up Friday had fatal consequences for three Hamas hostages. Israeli soldiers mistakenly identified the kidnapped men as terrorists and shot them dead as they tried to escape. The tragedy occurred during fighting in Shujaiya, northern Palestinian territory.
New details about the hostage situation will become known on Saturday: shortly before their deaths, the men are said to have held up a stick with a white cloth, a spokesperson for the Israeli army said. Despite the clear sign of peace, the Israeli soldiers appeared to have shown no mercy to the hostages.
The murder of the three men caused great consternation in and around Israel. They all lived in the Israeli kibbutz and had their lives ahead of them. Blick introduces the hostages who were supposed to die on Friday morning.
One of the dead was Yotam H. from the southern Israeli kibbutz Kfar Asa. As the “Times of Israel” writes, the 28-year-old was an avid musician. He played drums and was part of the heavy metal band Persephore. H’s death was officially confirmed on Friday evening by a spokesperson for the Israeli army.
The report said his family last saw him in a video taken on the day of the October 7 Hamas attack. In it you see H. standing in front of his house, which has apparently been set on fire by Hamas terrorists. Shots could also be heard on the video: a few minutes later, H. was kidnapped.
Samer E. from Kibbutz Nir Am in the south of Israel also accidentally fell victim to soldiers from his own country on Friday. E. worked in a chicken coop in Nir Am and often worked weekend shifts – including on the day of the Hamas attack, the Times of Israel writes. As the report shows, he is described by friends as a “great guy” who wanted to earn an honest living.
The third victim is Alon L.* (†26). As “Times of Israel” reports, L. lived in kibbutz Kfar Aza and studied computer technology. His parents are from Iran. Nothing more is known about L. so far.
