At first she thought she had eaten something wrong. But in reality an American woman (37) was pregnant. But she had no idea when she suddenly developed terrible stomach cramps and severe flatulence. And it just didn’t get better.

So after ten days she went to the doctor. An investigation yielded the unexpected result. She was already in the 23rd week. But the baby was not in the womb, but in the intestines. The specific case was reported in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Danger to the mother

The fertilized egg had implanted itself outside the uterus in the abdominal cavity. The technical term for this is abdominal ectopic pregnancy. A rare phenomenon. Only about one percent of all ectopic pregnancies occur in the abdominal cavity, meaning they occur in the abdominal cavity. Symptoms often include vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, dizziness and weakness.

Such a pregnancy can be dangerous for the mother. It can lead to internal bleeding. For this reason, the 37-year-old was taken to a special hospital, where her child was born in the 29th week after surgery and was immediately transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Although infants are viable after 24 weeks of pregnancy, the survival rate is only about 60 to 70 percent. That’s why the doctors waited until the 29th week. Ultimately, mother and baby were able to leave the hospital together three months after birth.
