The resignation of Liz Truss (47) was not unexpected. “After the Tories’ polls dropped to 20 percent, it was clear it wouldn’t be long before they resigned,” British expert Ina Habermann, 57, of the University of Basel told Blick.
The financial chaos she caused made her people nervous. Habermann: “If even high Tories have to fear for their seat, it will be tight for a prime minister in Britain.”
Truss failed not only because of the planned tax cut, the financing of which was anything but clear. “It was also her downfall that she didn’t talk to the party and go ahead with the idea,” Habermann says.
After she changed the Secretary of the Treasury, she had to start practically the opposite of her program. Habermann: “Your credibility was completely gone.”
Started as a hardliner
Truss was known as a hardliner, imitating the former “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013). “But I never expected her to cause such a debacle,” says Ina Habermann. Canceling is the only solution.
Being Prime Minister is not an easy job. “The big problem is the Tory government’s lack of concept,” Habermann said. The expert sees Rishi Sunak (42) or Penny Mordaunt (49) as his successors. “It has to be someone who can pull the wings of the party together and get everyone on board. Anyone who doesn’t make it will be dismantled.”
With the election of a new prime minister, the Conservatives would now have one last chance to correct their policies. Habermann: “If they fail again, they will have lost their credit long ago.”
