The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for almost two years now. A recently surfaced video claims to show Russian soldiers using Ukrainian prisoners as protective shields.

The US government-funded media organization Radio Liberty received the 19-minute video from the Ukrainian military and shared excerpts of the footage on its YouTube channel. According to information, a Russian soldier is hiding behind a Ukrainian prisoner in enemy territory. The Russian appears to push the Ukrainian in front of him so that he is not shot by the Ukrainian soldiers. More Russian soldiers follow the two.

Later, a skirmish occurred in which a grenade exploded near a group of Russian soldiers and unarmed prisoners.

Shield tactics to detect firing positions

The Ukrainians believe that the Russians are using this tactic to locate the firing positions of their troops. By entering enemy territory, the Russians are putting themselves in great danger. To avoid being hit themselves, they hide behind Ukrainian prisoners.

The scenes are said to have taken place near the town of Robotyne in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia Oblast. The region has been the scene of heavy fighting recently and is considered a strategic location for Putin’s army in the battle for the two eastern oblasts.

“This is strictly prohibited”

Radio Liberty has asked lawyers and military officials to carefully analyze the video. The experts concluded that the Russian army committed a war crime against Ukraine. If the scenes in the footage turn out to be true, Russia will have violated the Geneva Convention. “It is strictly forbidden to use prisoners of war to participate in hostilities,” Dmytro Lubinets, human rights commissioner in the Ukrainian parliament, said after seeing the video.

However, the video has not yet been independently verified. The Ukrainian army has no knowledge of what happened to the soldiers seen in the images. The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet responded to the allegations.
