Several contaminated drugs have been found in Indonesia and are believed to be linked to the deaths of 99 children this year. The children died of acute kidney failure.
Indonesia’s Food and Drug Control Agency said five of the 26 medicinal drinks studied, used to treat coughs, colds and fevers, contain too much ethylene glycol.
There is a suspicion that cough syrup with too high a content of this substance and diethylene glycol led to kidney failure in the children. Ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol are dangerous.
Last year, 206 cases of acute kidney failure in children were reported in Indonesia, 48 percent of whom died. This was announced by the Ministry of Health yesterday.
Normally there are only a few cases per month, said a spokesman for the AP news agency. Authorities are still investigating whether other risks may have led to the children’s acute kidney failure.
In The Gambia, dozens of children died after acute kidney failure as a result of cough syrup from the Indian company Maidan Pharmaceuticals. Indonesia has already banned all cough medicines due to the deaths in The Gambia.
