Impeachment proceedings: Republicans want Biden on the collar

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 fmXrkB”>

Revenge of the Republicans: they are pushing for impeachment proceedings against US President Joe Biden.

A corresponding resolution was passed by the Chamber of Congress on Wednesday by a majority of 221 to 212 votes. Republicans accuse Joe Biden (81) of being involved in controversial foreign transactions involving his son Hunter (53). The president rejects this and his Democrats accuse the Republicans of a political maneuver.

The then Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy (58) had already ordered “a formal impeachment investigation” against Biden on September 12. However, a vote on this never took place in the plenary meeting of the House.

Impeachment is considered impossible

The Republicans have now made amends to give the ongoing investigation a more legally stable basis – including in view of possible legal disputes surrounding the calling of witnesses and requesting documents. Republicans voted unanimously in favor of formalizing the ongoing investigation, while Democrats voted against it.

A so-called impeachment of the president – in a sense the charge in an impeachment proceeding – would require a new majority in the House of Representatives. That would lead to an impeachment trial in the Senate. A two-thirds majority in the Senate would then be required for actual impeachment. Biden’s impeachment is considered impossible, especially since his Democrats form the majority in the Senate.

Revenge of the Republicans

Democrats see the Republicans’ actions as revenge by the conservative party for the two impeachments against Donald Trump during his presidency – and an attempt to politically damage Biden before the presidential elections in November next year. Even numerous Republicans admit there is no evidence of wrongdoing by Biden.

Republicans accuse Hunter Biden of exploiting his father’s important position as Barack Obama’s vice president (2009 to 2017) in the past for business in Ukraine and China. They also accuse the current president of being involved in these transactions and lying to the public. (AFP)
