Thirty personalities from politics, civil society and law have called for better guarantees for the exercise of the right to demonstrate in Switzerland. The call is intended to remind people of the importance and necessity of freedom of expression and assembly in a democracy, as announced by Amnesty International.
According to a press release, the freedom to demonstrate in Switzerland is repeatedly and disproportionately restricted. The cities of Basel, Bern and Zurich have issued a general ban on demonstrations in connection with the conflict in the Middle East. An initiative by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) is also being discussed in Zurich, which aims to pass on the costs of police operations to those organizing demonstrations.
Other problems include the spread of peaceful demonstrations and the inappropriate use of weapons, Amnesty International wrote. “Democracies are fundamental to a vibrant, democratic constitutional state,” says Markus Müller, professor of public law at the University of Bern. (SDA)
