After oil pollution: Broye Canal reopened to shipping

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 fmXrkB”>

A floating barrier will remain in place on the Broye Canal in the coming days, as the Freiburg cantonal police announced.

The police wrote on Monday that the quick action of the fire brigade, the Environment Agency and the Forest and Nature Agency prevented the pollution from spreading to Lake Neuchâtel. However, the floating barriers on the Grand Canal and the Bibera Canal will remain in place in the coming days.

Thousands of liters of fuel oil flowed into the Biberen Canal on Friday because people were careless when transferring the fuel to the site of a company in Ried near Kerzers FR. According to a press release, the sewerage on the premises of the responsible company has been cleaned and contaminated soil has been removed. At the same time the fire brigade collected oil.

No fish deaths have been observed so far, the report said. However, game wardens found three dead swans near the canal. These were forwarded to the Institute for Fish and Game Health in Bern for analysis.
