At least six people have died as a result of heavy storms in the US state of Tennessee. Three people died in Clarksville after a tornado ripped through the city on Saturday afternoon (local time), the county government announced. So one of the fatalities was a child. 23 people were taken to hospital with injuries.
Three people were killed in Nashville, the capital of Tennessee, about an hour’s drive to the southeast, as a result of a severe tornado storm, the city’s situation center announced.
In both places, houses were partially seriously damaged and electricity lines were toppled. At least thirteen people were injured in a church collapse near Nashville. Some areas have not yet been reached by aid and rescue workers.
Clarksville Mayor Wes Golden called it a “sad day.” Prayers for all the injured and for those who have lost family members or their homes. An emergency shelter has been set up for anyone who needs help. The city’s residents were asked to remain in their homes to keep the streets clear for emergency services.
Videos showed the tornado making its way through Clarksville, leaving a path of destruction. The Nashville situation center reported that emergency services were still searching for injured people and assessing the damage. (SDA/kes)
