The newly elected president of Guatemala questions the prosecutor’s office

President-elect of GuatemalaBernardo Arévalo de León assured that the public ministry (prosecutor’s office) of that Central American country “has no credibility”, and that the new accusations against him raised today by that body are “absurd and ridiculous”.

Aréval de León’s statements came at a press conference after the Prosecutor’s Office indicated that this year’s elections, in which he won with 58 percent of the vote, must be annulled due to alleged administrative irregularities by the Supreme Electoral Court.

“It is time to strongly defend our voice and the possibility of building a different state. No one should stand between the people Guatemala and its spring,” emphasized Arévalo de León.

In the same vein, the 64-year-old academic said that “the coup attempt is real and has brought us to a key moment in the history of our country.”

This was also pointed to by the accusations of the Prosecutor’s Office this Friday Arévalo de León for an alleged case of money laundering, among other crimes.

“The prosecution has no credibility and is dedicated to lying,” said Arévalo de León, who described the charges against him as “absurd” and “ridiculous.”

“We won the elections and we will take office next January 14he added.

Despite the prosecution’s accusation, Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Court this Friday confirmed the election results recognizing Aréval de León as the winner.

However, the president of the court, Blanca Alfaro, emphasized that the decision of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in the country, could annul the election result.

Arévalo de León won the August 25 runoff with nearly a million votes ahead of his rival, former first lady Sandra Torres Casanova.

The newly elected president has been warning since September 1 that the Ministry of Publiccommanded by the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras carries out a “coup d’état” against him.
