Television host Sean Hannity actually wanted to build a bridge for his old companion. But former President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election to the White House in 2024, missed the ramp. For example, the presidential candidate said Tuesday during a panel discussion on Fox News Channel: Of course, in a possible second term, he will not abuse his power to take revenge on his political opponents, “except on the first day.”
The statement is typical Trump. It contains a pinch of truth, a pinch of boasting and a pinch of uncertainty – as if the 77-year-old politician is a television star trying to convince the public to watch the next season of a reality show.
However, the grain of truth in Trump’s casual statement about his return as a quasi-dictator is making many Americans uncomfortable.
In an interview with Hannity, the Republican specified that his announcement “only” referred to the border with Mexico, which he wanted to close completely on the first day of his new term, and to the energy policy of his new administration. “After that, I won’t be a dictator anymore.”
But there are now sufficient indications that ‘Trump II: The Return’ – to stick to the language of the reality show – could become a democratic crime thriller. On the one hand, there are the statements of the presidential candidate’s high-ranking advisors. And on the other hand, there are the hints Trump makes in countless campaign appearances.
Just an example of what his advisors say. Kash Patel, who could take on a top security policy post during a second Trump term, announced this week a vendetta against all of the ex-president’s enemies. “We will find the conspirators, not only in the government but also in the media,” Patel said. And then these people who allegedly helped Joe Biden manipulate the results of the 2020 presidential election would be brought to justice.
This is a pretty absurd statement considering there is no evidence that the 2020 election was tampered with. But Trump wants revenge on the people who allegedly sabotaged his political career. In recent months, he has announced that he wants to bring his successor in the White House to justice “and the entire Biden crime family.”
Trump is also increasingly taking radical positions that are incompatible with majority opinion in Washington and the current rules of the political game in the capital. In a second term, he could question ‘the mission’ of the NATO defense alliance, after already flirting with US departure in his first term.
Trump also talks about military attacks on drug cartels in Mexico, the forced deportation of millions of migrants and the deployment of the armed forces in the country’s interior.
President Joe Biden’s campaign team is in turn using Trump’s “undemocratic” statements to create sentiment for the ailing incumbent president. Campaign boss Julie Chavez Rodriguez released a statement on Tuesday warning about quasi-dictator Trump. “The Americans should believe him” when he talks about abusing his power. Even if it’s just on the first day.
