Ski lift horror in the Zillertal (A): Chair comes loose – mother and son (11) fall into the depths

The accident happened on the Lärchwaldexpress: lift operations have been suspended until further notice (archive image).

A sudden end to a family ski day in the Austrian Zillertal in the municipality of Schwendau.

Near support point 5 of the Lärchwald Express, a seat suddenly came loose, slid down the support cable and collided with the rear frame.

A mother (38) and her son (11) were thrown by the force of the impact and fell about ten meters. According to the Kronen Zeitung, the woman suffered serious back injuries and the child escaped with minor injuries.

The 41-year-old father managed to hold on to the chair. All three family members were flown to the clinic in Innsbruck by rescue helicopter.

Operation of the four-person chairlift has now been suspended until further notice. (gus)
