Caterina G.* (88) from Camporosso on the Italian Riviera is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit of Sanremo hospital. Reason: The Italian water supplier Iren sent her an invoice for 15,339 euros.

Her daughter-in-law opened the mail for her and read her the bill. And also that half of the money had already been transferred from her bank because she had issued a direct debit authorization. This upset the elderly lady so much that she was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Her condition remains critical.

Defective meter is to blame

It’s all a stupid mistake, the company told the newspaper Il Secolo XIX. In fact, the pensioner would only have to pay 65 euros for the period August to October. The error is believed to be due to a faulty meter or an error in the reading.

The water supplier Iren has already apologized to the family. “We are very sorry for what happened to the lady,” the letter said. “If it turns out that the mistake was made by Irish people, she will not have to pay anything.” In any case, she must receive a refund of the excess amount paid.

The family is considering legal action

However, Caterina G.’s family had to make a lot of effort before Iren realized the mistake. The incorrect bill states that Caterina G. used 4,182 cubic meters of water from February 21 to October 31. Her son Luigi T.* sent photos of the meters showing his mother’s actual water consumption. “You didn’t even answer me,” the man complains.

“Before sending such a bill to a sick pensioner, you could have had the meter checked by another technician. During our personal visit we heard that more false invoices had also been sent, but they were not for such a high amount.”

The family is now considering taking legal action against the company: “We are going to discuss what to do. This history must not repeat itself.”
