Innkeeper arrested: one dead and fifteen poisoned by fish in Bordeaux

After fifteen cases of poisoning and one death among mainly foreign guests in a restaurant in Bordeaux, southern France, the innkeeper has been taken into police custody. The public prosecutor’s office in Bordeaux announced on Wednesday that the owner is under investigation for manslaughter by negligence and bodily harm.

Homemade canned sardines were identified as the cause of the poisonings, which occurred between September 4 and 10. The innkeeper must be placed under judicial supervision during the investigation and may no longer work in the catering industry.

Five poisoned people had to be ventilated

The poisoned people who were in Bordeaux during the Rugby World Cup matches were struck by botulism. This is a serious disease that leads to death in five to ten percent of cases and is accompanied by enormous symptoms. The dead woman was a Greek woman living in France. The other victims came from Germany, Canada and the US. Five of the victims had to be given artificial respiration in hospital.
