Climate activist radicalized?: This is how Greta Thunberg explains her pro-Palestinian position

The Swedish group of the global climate movement Fridays for Future around the well-known activist Greta Thunberg (20) has once again expressed its solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. “Solidarity with the Palestinians and all affected citizens has never been in question for us,” the group wrote in opinion pieces published on Tuesday in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the British Guardian.

“Contrary to what many claim, Fridays for Future has neither ‘radicalized’ nor ‘become political,’” the article said. “We have always been political because we have always been a movement for justice.” The fight for climate justice is closely linked to the protection of people and their rights. “This means that we must speak out when people suffer, are forced to flee or are killed – regardless of the reason,” wrote Fridays for Future Sweden.

Scuffle with climate demonstrator in Amsterdam

Fridays for Future founder Thunberg has repeatedly caused outrage in recent weeks with pro-Palestinian statements. In mid-November, for example, she appeared at a major climate demonstration in Amsterdam wearing a Palestinian scarf and shouted with other participants, apparently with a view to the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories: ‘No climate justice on occupied land.’

She had previously had an argument with a climate protester. The man jumped on stage in front of the cameras and shouted into the microphone: “I came here for a climate demonstration, not to hear political views.”

Luisa Neubauer distances herself

After the outbreak of war in the Middle East, the international organization Fridays for Future said in a post on the online service Instagram that the global media was “financed by imperialist governments that support Israel.” The group spoke of “brainwashing” and described Israel as an “apartheid system.” No mention was made of the Israelis killed by the radical Islamist Hamas in their major attack on October 7.

The German Fridays for Future group distanced itself from statements by the international association directed against Israel. The organization in Germany and prominent representatives such as Luisa Neubauer (27) have repeatedly taken a stand against anti-Semitism and hostility towards Israel in recent weeks. (nad/AFP)
